Egerton University to administer bar examinations
Egerton University will be the first institution of higher learning in the country to administer bar examinations outside Nairobi beginning 31 March 2022. This is according to the Council of Legal Education Chief Executive Officer Dr Wambua Kituku.
Dr Kituku said that the move was part of the Council's effort to devolve its administration of the advocates training programme. Dr Kituku made his remarks while paying a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage at the Main Campus in Njoro on 17 March 2022.
Present during the meeting were the Director Licensing and Compliance at CLE Ms Mary Mutugi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Bernard Aduda, Registrar Academic Affairs Prof. Mwanarusi Saidi, Dean Faculty of Law Dr Ruth Aura, and the Chair Public Law Department Mr Charles Getanda.
In his remarks, the VC Prof. Kibwage welcomed the move adding that with the continued support from CLE, Egerton University will become the leading Law School in the country. He acknowledged the regulator's role in ensuring quality legal education and its continued support of the University.
The DVC AA Prof. Aduda called upon CLE to consider the challenges faced by public universities such as Egerton University, even as they deliver on their mandate. "We will do what is within our means to comply with the regulations. We appreciate that you keep us on our toes to ensure high standards in legal education," added the DVC AA.
The Registrar AA Prof. Saidi noted that CLE has been supportive of the University and, in particular, the Faculty of Law in the admission of students. The Dean Faculty of Law Dr Aura said that CLE had allowed the admission of 150 students against the declared 100 students, a rise from previous admissions of 60 students.
The Director, Licensing and Compliance at CLE Ms Mary Mutugi, challenged the University to be applying for more grants in addition to the UNDP-Amkeni Wakenya grant that is funding the Faculty of Law Legal Aid Project (FOLLAP).
