In a remarkable display of collective commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, Egerton University recently hosted a monumental tree-planting event led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage, which saw the planting of over 14,050 trees.
The Monday 13th of November 2023 event was in support of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme - towards the growing of fifteen billion trees. It brought together a diverse array of university officials, faculty members, and students and the Egerton Community came together for the National Tree Growing initiative at Main Campus, Ngongogeri Farm and Kenyatta Campus to plant various species like the Cedar, Pine, Cypress, Moringa, Grevillea robusta. Other species planted were the fruit trees are Avocado, Guava and White support.
A total of 6500 trees were planted led by Prof. Kibwage, and in his personal tree-planting goal,he planted 30 trees assisted by students, fostering an eco-friendly focus to plant the “Kibwage Green Belt” around the University. He then uploaded the pictures of the types of trees to the government's Jaza Miti App, showcasing the eco-friendly initiative. Ngongogeri Farm, in collaboration with the community, planted 6,000 tree seedlings. About 200 tree seedlings with some being fruit trees were planted at Kenyatta Campus and another 1350 by the Estates docket of the University.

This collaborative effort underscores the university's commitment to sustainability and actively engages students in building a greener future for Egerton University. Over 1500 trees were donated to the community members as a corporate social responsibility (CSR).
“This is a day that we have heeded to the call by his excellency the President to plant trees in our University. We had begun to plant trees in this section of the Dam side when the Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi visited under the adopt a forest initiative,” said Prof. Kibwage. The Vice Chancellor noted that the day was a milestone in achieving the strategic targets of the University.
Held at Dam 3 on Egerton University's campus, the event attracted a diverse assembly, including university officials, faculty members, and students. Notable figures present were DVC Academic Affairs and Research Prof. Benard Aduda, DVC Administration Planning and Development Prof. Richard Mulwa, and Prof. Japheth Onyando, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
Prof. Mulwa emphasized that tree planting is ingrained in the culture of Egerton University, considering it a deeply held value. He fondly recalled the dedication of former Egerton University Prof. Ezra Maritim, who planted trees in every available open space.
Highlighting the holistic nature of the initiative, students from Egerton University Nakuru Town Campus, led by Prof. Joshua Ogendo, participated by visiting the Main Campus in Njoro to contribute to the tree-planting effort.
The Estates department played a pivotal role in preparing the grounds for tree planting, contributing to the university's broader strategy of cultivating a green campus environment. Mr. Orina led the department's efforts, ensuring the efficient planting of trees around the university. The Shamba system was employed to clear previously bushy areas, mitigating security risks for students and allowing for the planting of new trees.
Various deans from faculties such as Commerce and Engineering, along with Dean of Students Dr. Japheth Muthamia, actively engaged in the initiative. Dr. Muthamia, specifically, played a crucial role in mobilizing students, instilling a sense of responsibility and participation within the vibrant student community.
Additional contributions came from Director Welfare Service Dr. Father Gerishon Kinyanjui and Prof. Charles M'erimba, Head of the Limnology department. Their involvement underscored the university's commitment to a multidisciplinary approach to the tree-planting exercise.
Coordination of the event was facilitated by Prof. Paul Kimurto, Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization, and Agro Science Park. Prof. Kimurto's leadership was integral to organizing the logistics and ensuring effective communication among participating staff members. Dr. Kirui, an environmental expert and faculty member, collaborated seamlessly with Prof. Kimurto, further ensuring the initiative's success.
The widespread participation of university officials, including President of Africa UniNet Prof. Nzula Kitaka, Director of International Linkages and Career Services, and Director of Board of Postgraduate Studies Prof. George Ogendi, showcased the collaborative spirit inherent at Egerton University.
Beyond the immediate campus community, the tree-planting event extended its impact to the neighboring Beeston community. Vice Chancellor Kibwage's donation of over 1500 seedlings exemplified the university's commitment to environmental stewardship beyond its borders.
Crucial support also came from departments such as Finance and Procurement, along with numerous other staff members, ensuring the logistical and administrative success of the event. Their collective dedication reflected Egerton University's commitment not only to academic excellence but also to fostering a sustainable and socially responsible campus environment.
The tree-planting initiative precedes the annual 'Run For the Mau' cross-country event organized by Egerton University, further solidifying the institution's dedication to environmental conservation, community engagement, and the holistic development of its students and staff. This collaborative effort serves as a beacon, illustrating the positive impact achievable when a university community unites for a shared cause.
